Akumal.
Where sea turtles swim beside you.

Akumal.
Donde las tortugas nadan junto a ti.

Crystal-clear Caribbean waters, an ancient coral reef, and a village that has somehow stayed quiet — Akumal is Tulum's calmer, bluer neighbor.

Quiet bay, extraordinary reef.

Bahía tranquila, arrecife extraordinario.

Akumal means "Place of the Turtle" in Mayan, and the name holds up. Green sea turtles have been feeding in the bay for thousands of years — they're still here, gliding through seagrass beds just meters from shore. Since 2016 the bay has been a protected turtle refuge.

The town is a short drive south of Playa del Carmen and north of Tulum — close enough to everything, far enough from the noise. The beach curves gently around a protected bay, and the reef sits just offshore, alive with parrotfish, eagle rays, and the occasional nurse shark.

Three distinct bays, one Caribbean village.

Tres bahías distintas, un solo pueblo caribeño.

01

Akumal Bay

Bahía Akumal

"The heart of the village"

"El corazón del pueblo"

The main bay, protected by the reef, with calm, clear water you can wade into from the shore. Restaurants and dive shops are steps away, and sea turtles visit the seagrass beds daily. The most convenient base for families and first-timers.

02

Half Moon Bay

Bahía Media Luna

"Quiet, residential, reef-close"

"Tranquila, residencial, cerca del arrecife"

A smaller, more secluded bay just north of the main beach. The reef here is shallower and even easier to snorkel directly from shore. Mostly private villas and vacation homes — quieter and more residential in feel, with a beautiful crescent of white sand.

03

Yalku Lagoon Area

Zona de la Laguna Yalku

"Freshwater meets the sea"

"Agua dulce se encuentra con el mar"

At the northern edge of Akumal, the Yalku Lagoon is where cenote freshwater flows into the Caribbean — creating a brackish ecosystem full of colorful tropical fish. The surrounding area is quieter and more exclusive, with a few exceptional properties and almost no foot traffic.

04

Jade Bay / South Akumal

Bahía Jade / Sur de Akumal

"Secluded, sophisticated, coral-rich"

"Aislada, sofisticada, rica en coral"

South of the main village, Jade Bay offers a more private experience with direct reef access and fewer visitors. The coral formations here are particularly vibrant, and the villas are larger and more spread out — for groups or couples who want the reef without the crowds.

The reef is the reason. Everything else is a bonus.

El arrecife es el motivo. Todo lo demás es un extra.

Turtle Snorkeling

Snorkel con Tortugas

Akumal Bay is a protected turtle refuge: snorkeling with the turtles is done with an authorized local guide, life vest on, between 9 am and 5 pm. Go at opening time and you'll share the seagrass beds with green sea turtles before the bay fills up.

Reef Diving

Buceo en el Arrecife

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the world's second largest. Dive shops in the village offer morning two-tank dives to walls, tunnels and caverns teeming with life — eagle rays, nurse sharks, lobster, and parrotfish in every color imaginable.

Cenote Circuit

Circuito de Cenotes

The Riviera Maya sits atop one of the world's largest underground river systems. Within 20 minutes of Akumal: Cenote Dos Ojos, the Aktun Chen cave system, and a dozen smaller, less-visited pools with cathedral light filtering through the jungle canopy.

Yalku Lagoon

Laguna Yalku

A one-of-a-kind ecosystem where freshwater cenotes meet the sea. Snorkel through clear brackish water among schools of colorful fish. Arrive at opening time for the best light and fewest visitors.

Tulum Ruins

Ruinas de Tulum

A walled Mayan city on a cliff above the Caribbean, and one of the very few built on the coast. 25 minutes from Akumal — go early to avoid the crowds, and bring your swimsuit: there's a small beach at the base of the ruins where iguanas bask in the sun.

Dining & Sundowners

Gastronomía y Sundowners

Lol-Ha, a beachfront classic in Akumal since the 1980s, serves fresh ceviche and margaritas on the bay with views straight out to the reef. For a short drive south, Tulum's restaurant scene — from casual palapas to destination dining — is a 20-minute ride away.
